Bourbon Blackberry Smash

Raise your hand if it’s been a bit of a crazy year. (I can’t be the only one, right??) Somehow I’ve felt a bit behind on everything, always scrambling to catch up. Work has been a constant swirl of madness, I’ve been dealing on and off with the weirdest health issues (the latest: I injured my back so severely on the dance floor that I was couch-bound for days) and have been having a slight existential crisis about turning 30.

So basically, I cannot wait for summer. Theoretically, life will slow down, right? There will be time for sitting on NYC rooftops or even *gasp* a beach, sipping cocktails and staring at the sunset? Let’s make that a goal — to spend more time staring at the sunset with a drink in hand.

And if you’re going to be drinking, you should definitely drink this bourbon blackberry smash. It shares DNA with one of my summer faves, this blackberry bramble. But while that was all clean and fresh with gin, lime and seltzer, this smash is a bit bolder, with bourbon, lemon and ginger beer. It’s bright and slightly spicy (real ginger beer makes a huge difference here!) and exactly what one needs on a warm sunny day.

Cheers to summer! Hope you get a chance to slow down, sit around and sip a cocktail!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10–12 blackberries (plus more for garnishing if desired [I ran out oops])
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • ice cubes
  • 3 ounces bourbon
  • 2 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 1 bottle chilled ginger beer (this is more than you need … aka seconds?)

Instructions

  1. In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle the blackberries and sugar.
  2. Add the ice cubes, bourbon and lemon juice. Shake well, then strain into two glasses filled with ice.
  3. Top off the cocktails with the ginger beer, stirring slightly to mix. Serve, garnishing with additional blackberries if desired.
