Bourbon Chai Hot Toddy

bourbon chai hot toddy 4

Guys, I was first introduced to a bourbon chai hot toddy this weekend (at a very cool bar in DC) and I’ve since become OBSESSED. I’m not a big bourbon drinker, nor do I particularly like chai, but the combination of cinnamon and cardamom and cloves and spicy alcohol was pretty perfect. I had three of them on Saturday night, and subsequently spent all of Sunday and Monday and Tuesday thinking about how I could make one at home.

I had grand plans of steeping traditional Darjeeling tea (I still have some from my trip a few years ago!) with fresh spices and then straining the mixture and … it’s the holidays. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

So without further ado, the only cocktail you’ll need this month. It’s warm and comforting, easy and boozy, and can easily be made in large batches (as long as you have a large thermos) for parties. Cheers!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bag chai tea (I used Twinings, but any brand will do)
  • 8 ounces hot water
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves to garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large heat-proof mug, pour the hot water over the tea bag. Let it steep for 3-4 minutes, then discard the tea bag.
  2. Stir in the honey, lemon juice and bourbon. Serve immediately.
